Course Overview

Artificial Intelligence is rapidly changing how organisations manage information, support decision-making, improve efficiency, and deliver services. Across the public sector, there is growing recognition that staff require not only awareness of AI technologies, but also the practical capability to use AI tools responsibly, effectively, and in compliance with evolving governance and regulatory requirements.

This full-day programme is designed to provide public sector professionals with a practical and accessible understanding of Artificial Intelligence (AI), AI Literacy, and the organisational responsibilities associated with AI adoption within modern working environments.

The programme explores both the opportunities and risks associated with AI use in the public sector, including governance, data quality, ethical considerations, information management, and emerging regulatory obligations under frameworks such as the EU AI Act, GDPR, and wider national guidance relating to digital transformation and responsible AI use.

Alongside this governance and compliance focus, the programme provides practical insight into how AI tools can support day-to-day work activities, enhance productivity, improve efficiency, and assist staff in managing administrative and operational tasks more effectively.

The programme is also aligned with the evolving Public Sector Capability Framework and the growing emphasis on digital capability, innovation, critical thinking, data awareness, and responsible decision-making across the public service. As organisations continue to modernise services and adopt new technologies, AI literacy is increasingly becoming an important component of future workforce readiness and organisational capability development.

Learning Outcomes:

Participants will explore:

  • What AI is and how it works in practice
  • The difference between AI, automation, and machine learning
  • AI literacy and its role within modern public sector organisations
  • Data quality, governance, and ethical considerations in AI adoption
  • Emerging compliance and regulatory requirements for AI use
  • Practical and appropriate AI use cases within public sector environments
  • Risks associated with poor governance, inaccurate outputs, or inappropriate deployment
  • How AI tools can support administrative, operational, and knowledge-based work
  • The importance of human oversight, critical thinking, and responsible AI use

Day 2:

The programme also includes a practical workshop and live demonstration element on the second day, allowing participants to engage with real-world workplace scenarios and observe AI tools being applied in a structured and practical setting. Facilitated demonstrations and interactive exercises will help participants build confidence in understanding how AI tools can be integrated into day-to-day workflows while reinforcing good governance, risk awareness, and responsible usage practices.

Through a combination of expert-led discussion, practical examples, live demonstrations, and facilitated workshop activities, participants will leave with a stronger understanding of how AI can support public sector operations while balancing compliance, accountability, and organisational responsibility.

Intended Audience

The programme is designed for managers, policy professionals, operational staff, governance teams, ICT professionals, and decision-makers seeking to build practical AI capability while supporting organisational compliance, efficiency, and future workforce readiness.
