A data breach refers to the unauthorised access, disclosure, or acquisition of sensitive or confidential information. This can occur through various means, such as hacking, malware, phishing, physical theft of devices or documents, or even human error.
When a data breach happens, sensitive information such as personal data, financial records, intellectual property, or trade secrets may be exposed to unauthorised individuals or entities. This can lead to serious consequences, including identity theft, financial fraud, reputational damage, and legal liabilities.
Organisations of all sizes and across all industries are vulnerable to data breaches and the impact can be significant so having a data breach response plan in place can help organisations respond quickly and effectively if a breach does occur. This plan should outline roles and responsibilities, escalation procedures, and communication protocols to ensure an effective and coordinated response. Identifying the breach as soon as possible, determine the scope and severity of the breach and notifying the relevant persons are crucial.
