Course Overview
Preparing for a Capability-Based Interview is focused on helping candidates prepare for interviews using the new Civil Service Capability Framework. This new framework is a move away from the competency-based interviewing approach that has traditionally been used by the Civil Service and public sector bodies. It is already being used at interviews run by the Public Appointments Service (PAS) across all grades and requires different interview preparation than preparing for a competency-based interview. The use of the Capability Framework will continue to become more widespread with most civil service departments and public service bodies who were using the Public Jobs / PAS competencies now planning their transition to the new Capability Framework.
This training course will demystify the new Capability Framework for you. You will understand the framework and the preparation that you need to do if your interview is a capability based interview. You will learn about what types of examples best suit the different capability dimensions and learn how the previously used competencies map onto those new dimensions. This will help you in your preparation and choice of examples. You will also receive hints and tips to help you with that preparation and lists of sample questions.
Interviewers will now be more interested in considering you as a whole person, your behaviours, skills, strengths, knowledge, values, motivation and interests, This means that you will need to prepare new types of answers. You will learn about each of these, the types of questions you might be asked and what you need to focus on in your answers to them. You will receive tips and guidance to help you prepare your answers for these new questions and lists of sample questions.
These new style interviews are also now explicitly allowing for candidates to demonstrate their potential, while the previous competency-based interviews relied on candidates demonstrating previous experience. You will learn about how the interviews are now scored and understand a number of different ways in which you can demonstrate your potential at interview.
This course is highly interactive and practical and will give you the skills and confidence needed to be successful at a capability-based interview.

- Learn about changes to scoring for interviews using the Capability Framework and identify how you can demonstrate potential at the interview
