Managing People Effectively
1-Day Programme for Line Managers and HR Managers
A Word from your Trainer:
Since March 2020, managers across the public sector have been leading and managing people and teams remotely. While many public sector organisations have already introduced or are planning hybrid forms of working, recent public health announcements will mean that we will see a continuation of remote working for some time. Managing, motivating and developing people is a key part of every line manager’s role, and managing remotely presents many challenges. I have been delivering online training for managers across the public sector over the past 18 months. Based on my observations and reflections, some of the main challenges in managing people remotely are:
- Communicating with and engaging people and teams – keeping people connected
- Motivating, supporting and managing performance – e.g. goalsetting, feedback, review
- Onboarding and developing people
- Supporting wellbeing and inclusion – making sure that people are valued and supported
- Managing conflict and employee relations issues – understanding policies
- Having difficult conversations
This one day programme was created designed to meet these needs. It is designed to support managers in developing the competencies (knowledge skills and behaviors) they need to manage motivate and develop people effectively – whether they work remotely or not. I’m really looking forward to this training programme and to meeting and working with our participants.

‘Line managers have a very important role to play, not only in managing people and operations day-to-day, but also in implementing HR and other organisational policies and in supporting their team’s development (www.cidpd.co.uk)
The development of line managers’ people management skills is a critical component of best practice human resource management. Line managers need to have strong competencies in managing and motivating people and performance, and research shows a strong correlation between the role of the line manager and employee engagement. This new programme aims to help managers to develop their people management skills and understand their policy responsibilities as people managers.
This one day programme covers the following topics:
- Motivating and managing performance and development – through goalsetting, feedback and meaningful conversations
- Understanding and managing conflict and difficult conversations positively
- An overview of the role of the manager in implementing key employee relations policies (disciplinary and grievance procedures, dignity at work policies)
- The role of the manager in supporting employee wellbeing
- Tips and techniques for communicating with and engaging teams – remotely/face to face
This is a highly interactive one day online training programme. The programme comprises a range of learning interventions including self-assessment tools, role play exercises, breakout room exercises and group discussion/reflection.
Who is this programme for?
This programme will be of particular interest and benefit to:
Line managers who have responsibility for directly managing individual employees or teams
HR managers who want to devolve people management responsibilities to line managers
