It is often said that good leaders are made and not born\, and that leadership skills are acquired through identifying your own leadership styles and adapting them to the situation and people involved in your workplace. Formal training programmes in leadership provide a learning structure within which to develop an understanding of the principles of leadership and identify areas in which individuals need to concentrate their development effort to be excellent leaders and managers. \nThis Certificate in Effective Leadership is a qualification exploring roles and theories\, winning and maintaining commitment\, setting and communicating direction. Attendees will be given a thorough grounding in the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). This instrument is the most widely-used framework for providing insights and understanding of individual preferences that may drive specific workplace behaviours. It is particularly useful for those who do not have the opportunity to engage actively in leadership but who are preparing to do so\, or for those employed in a leadership role and are keen to underpin their practice with a clearer knowledge of the principles of leadership. \nLearning Outcomes\nThroughout the course\, attendees will: \n\nIdentify the key principles of strategy in leadership – vision\, mission\, strategy – and the roles they play\nAssess and develop their own ability to motivate others and build commitment to their organisation’s values and goals;\nAssess the effect the prevailing leadership styles have on behaviour and performance in their organisation;\nDevelop an in-depth understanding of their own personality and how it influences their behaviour at work across a range of contexts and situations;\nDevelop their ability to communicate their organisation’s values and goals to others;\nDevelop their own ability to use different leadership styles\, as appropriate to the situation and people involved;\nIdentify and improve on the factors shaping levels of motivation and commitment;\nImprove and develop their personal leadership and management skills for the public sector workplace; and\nUse the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) to focus on the likely strengths and positive qualities of different personality styles.\nDevelop an understanding of leading teams and their own leadership capability.\n\nIntended Audience\nThe intended audience are public sector employees who in the course of their work are expected to perform a leadership role. Delegates have been from the civil service\, state agencies and bodies\, universities and local authorities. They are usually head of a function\, a manager\, director or senior executive (typically equivalent to HEO\, AP\, PO grades in the civil service). It is also of value and interest to specialists\, officers and officials at all grades who are preparing to take on leadership roles and who wish to progress their careers. \nEvaluation and Validation\nInformal Validation Multiple learning interventions are built into this programme including: case studies\, self-assessment\, group exercises\, role plays and presentations are used throughout the course and customised to meet the specific needs and experience of attendees. \nAccreditation Attendees will receive a continuing professional development (CPD) certificate on successful completion of the programme. \nTrainer\nOur trainer\, Ashley Hughes\, is a driven professional with 25 years’ experience in the People Development arena working across public\, private and voluntary sectors.  She has exemplary learning and development credentials offering a proven track record of success in the design and delivery of engaging learning programmes. Ashley’s specialities include soft-skill training\, personality profiling workshops\, leadership development\, organisational effectiveness\, building high performance teams\, managing virtual teams\, managing change and creating enabling organisational cultures. \nAshley has worked with Public Affairs Ireland for over 15 years and is the programme designer and leader for the ILM accredited Certificate in Leadership programme. SUMMARY:Pre-Retirement Planning - Two Day In Person Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Spouse/partner can attend free of charge. \n\nFull Course Details\nDay 1: Tuesday\, October 6\, 2026 | In Person – Grand Canal Hotel\nDay 2: Wednesday\, October 7\, 2026| In Person – Grand Canal Hotel\nTime: 9.30am – 3.30pm\nCPD: 11 CPD Hours\nMethod of Delivery: In Person\nFee: €895 \n\n\nSeminar Overview\nPlanning for life after retirement or making sensible provisions for your future is probably one of the most important things you will ever do. This Pre-Retirement Planning course will provide you with the information and support you need to look to the future with confidence. \nPlanning for retirement is often left to the last minute. International research and our extensive experience suggest that people should realistically give some thoughts to the major changes and challenges of retirement three to five years before the event. \nTopics Covered \nA positive approach to change in retirement\nDealing with changes in relationships\, taking steps to maintain our good health\, and managing time in retirement is the main focus of this session. Practical ideas are explored to give participants the tools to plan and deal successfully with the challenges presented by these aspects of life. \nWills & inheritance\nGetting our personal affairs in order so we can get on with the job of enjoying retirement is very important.\nSome practical ideas in relation to dealing with our legal affairs are explained on this session. \nPersonal taxation\nMany people are paying more tax than they need to for a number of reasons. We outline how the tax system works and show participants how to maximise their position and keep their tax affairs in order. \nSocial welfare system\nThis system in Ireland is extremely complex and we guide participants through what can appear to be a minefield to ensure they understand how the system works\, what they are entitled to and how to maintain and claim those entitlements. \nFinancial planning issues\nHaving worked long and hard to earn a pension and lump sum it is important that participants are equipped to understand the plethora of options available today for investing money. Our team of independent experts explain how the most common financial products work\, and alert participants to the questions they need to ask when they seek financial advice. Specific financial advice cannot and will not be given to participants on the seminar. \n\nWho should attend?\nAnyone who sees retirement as an option within the next three to five years. Spouses and partners are welcomed and encouraged to join the discussion as the areas we cover are as important for this person as the person actually retiring from an organisation. Research shows very clearly that the amount of satisfaction a person gets in retirement is directly related to the amount of preparation they put in to planning for retirement. \nThis seminar will also prove useful for Human Resources Specialists\, Employee Assistance Officers and those involved in the area of Pensions. \n\nCourse Tutor\nPatrick Murphy is Ireland’s longest practicing\, full-time\, independent and professionally qualified practitioner in the area of retirement education. He achieved MSc. in retirement and life planning from Surrey University.  Through his work with his peers in Europe he brings the broadest insights into retirement preparation. He was made an Advanced Professional Member of the prestigious Life Planning Association in the U.K. His constant innovation and updating of his programmes is the benchmark for other providers to seek to emulate. \nPatrick is supported throughout the country by an extensive team of independent experts in all areas of retirement education\, thus guaranteeing participants receive the most up to date\, accurate and independent information to assist them in planning for their retirement. \nParticipant limits apply\, so secure your place now. \n\nTailored Training \nAll of our open programmes can also be run on an in-house basis. For more information\, see our page on In-House Training. \nMultiple Delegate Discount\n\n3+ Delegates – 5% Discount\n5+ Delegates – 10% Discount\n10+ Delegates – 15% Discount\n\nTo avail of our multiple delegate discount for 3 or more delegates\, you must email registrations@pai.ie with the name and details of all those you wish to book. SUMMARY:Minute-Taking Made Easy - Online Workshop
DESCRIPTION:About the seminar \nWorking practices have changed significantly in the last few years.  With the growth of hybrid working\, accurate minutes are increasingly important. Colleagues who may have exchanged information and kept up to date simply by being in the work environment now rely on minutes more than ever. This means  minutes must be clear and understandable for people who did not attend a meeting\, as well as for attendees. This workshop will help you to assess what is required for the minutes you take. \nThe ability to take clear and concise minutes that accurately reflect the decisions taken and actions agreed at important meetings is an essential requirement for anyone working in the public sector. RIAs are at their best where they provide a sound basis for the laws and regulations that are needed to protect citizens’ rights\, promote a safer society and ensure more confidence in goods and services. SUMMARY:The AIE Regulations - Access to Information on the Environment
DESCRIPTION:Seminar Overview\nThe AIE Regulations allow access to environmental information held by a public authority. These Regulations also outline the manner in which requests for information may be submitted to public authorities\, as well as the manner in which public authorities are required to deal with requests. \nThe AIE Regulations also provide for a formal appeals procedure known as an internal review in the event that a person is unhappy with the decision about their request. If an applicant is still unhappy after an internal review they may apply to the Office of the Commissioner for Environmental Information (OCEI) or an independent decision on the matter. \nThe number of access requests under the AIE Regulations are increasing steadily\, as noted in the Annual Reports of the Commissioner for Environmental Information. Environmental issues are now reported upon more frequently in the media. Furthermore\, climate litigation against governments\, corporations and fossil fuel companies continues to increase across the world. \nThis one-day online training course will focus on the requirements for processing a request. It will examine the application of certain exemptions\, the appeals process\, procedural issues\, key OCEI decisions and more. \nParticipants will leave the course with a much more advanced understanding of the AIE Regulations. \nWhat is Environmental Information?\n\n\nThe AIE Regulations define environmental information as: \n\n\n\n\n“any information in written\, visual\, aural\, electronic or any other material form on the below \n– environmental elements (soil\, land\, water\, air etc) \n– factors affecting the elements of the environment (waste\, discharges\, emissions) \n– human health and safety \n\n\nWhat Public Bodies are Subject to AIE?\nAccording to the official government website\, \n\n\nThe AIE Regulations broadly define “public authorities” to encompass all bodies that have a role in public administration and that possess environmental information. It is important to note that this definition is broader in scope than the definition of “public body” in the FoI Acts. \n\n\n\n\nUnder the 2011 Regulations\, the Minister is required to publish an indicative list of public authorities that are subject to the AIE Regulations. These are: \n\n\n\n\n\ngovernment departments\nlocal authorities\nnon-commercial state agencies\ncommercial state agencies\nregulatory bodies\n\n\n\nLearning Outcomes\n\nUnderstanding the European Communities (Access to Information on the Environment) Regulations 2007 to 2018\nRecent Trends and Statistics\nDefining “Public Authorities”\nDefining “Information on the Environment”\nApplying Exemptions\nProcedural Issues: Charges and Timeframes\nReview and Appeal\nOffice of the Commissioner for Environmental Information\nKey Decisions\nThe Role of the Decision Maker\n\nAudience\nThis course is ideally suited to anyone working within a public authority responsible for processing AIE requests and also all public bodies who are subject to Access to Information on the Environment. \nTailored Training \n\n\n\nAll of our open programmes can also be run on an in-house basis.
