Course Overview
This workshop is a focused, transitional programme designed for Interview Board members and recruitment professionals who are already familiar with competency‑based interviewing and now need to adapt their practice to the new Civil Service Capability Framework. It is not a full interviewer‑skills course. Instead, it concentrates specifically on helping interviewers understand the Framework, interpret the Dimensions and Sub‑Dimensions, and adjust their questioning, probing and scoring approaches to align with the new model.
The workshop explains how the Capability Framework now underpins question design and assessment, and how it differs from the previous competency‑based approach. Participants learn how to explore a wider range of evidence, including behaviours, strengths, knowledge, values, motivation and interests, and how to incorporate these elements into their existing interviewing practice. The session also covers the revised scoring approach associated with capability‑based interviewing, enabling interviewers to apply the new scoring indicators consistently and confidently.
All content is based on the current Civil Service Capability Framework and reflects best practice in structured, fair and evidence‑based interviewing, in line with the Code of Practice for Appointments to the Civil and Public Service.
Learning Outcomes
- By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- Understand the new Capability Framework and the Dimensions and Sub‑Dimensions of the Framework
- Learn how the new Dimensions and Sub‑Dimensions map onto the previously used competency model
- Identify similarities and differences between this new approach to interviews and the previous competency‑based interviews
- Obtain sample interview questions that can be used with capability‑based interviewing, addressing experience, examples, behaviours, skills, strengths, knowledge, motivation, values and interests
- Acquire the method of constructing capability‑based interview questions
- Appreciate the importance of probing questions, especially when candidates use prepared or AI‑generated answers
- Know and apply the new scoring approaches that are part of capability‑based interviewing
Intended Audience
This workshop will be of benefit to those who will be members of Interview Boards for Civil Service and Public Sector roles using the new Capability Framework. It will also benefit members of HR, Recruitment and Talent Acquisition teams who are involved in recruitment or advising staff members about these new interviews.
