It has been announced that the Government is to implement a number of recommendations of the Limerick Local Government Committee, published in 2010 including the creation of a new single local authority to replace the current Limerick City and County Councils.

It expected that savings of over €15m for the Authority will be made over time and should serve to “address the social, economic and administrative issues” the city currently experiences, Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government, Phil Hogan, TD has announced today.

The new authority will come into being following the 2014 local elections. Further details will be made available as soon as possible in relation to planning, preparatory work and implementation arrangements.
